When to Hire out Home Projects

Sometimes, you just have to hire out your home projects, especially if they can cause more damage to your home by doing them yourself. Here are a few home projects that you should hire out, no matter how skilled you *think* you are:

Carpet Cleaning

Cleaning your carpets is something that seems easy to do yourself until you look closer at what all goes into it. It isnā€™t as easy as just renting a machine – you need a vacuum to pick up debris, a special carpet-cleaning machine, and enough special soap for all of your carpets. But thatā€™s not all! Make sure you set enough time aside to move all of your furniture to another area and then move it all back when your carpet is done dryingā€¦ I donā€™t know about you, but my arms are tired just writing that. Save the time and energy and hire someone to do all of that for you. Hiring someone to clean your carpets is relatively cheap, so it is definitely something to consider!

Popcorn Ceiling Removal

I have not personally had to remove popcorn ceilings in my home (thank goodness!), but knowing people who have tried to do this themselves, I would HIGHLY recommend hiring out for this one. There is a lot more than you would think that goes into removing popcorn ceilings, and the result is almost always a catastrophic mess in your house. Save yourself the trouble of the work and the mess by hiring someone to help you out with this task. Trust me, youā€™ll be glad you did!

Electrical Work

Electrical work is something that you most definitely want to hire out because if you mess something up, you could be in a lot of trouble and when I say a lot of trouble, I really mean it. According to the National Fire Protection Association, ā€œElectrical failures or malfunctions were the second leading cause of U.S. home fires in 2012-2016 (behind fires caused by unattended equipment), accounting for 13% of home structure fires. Fires involving electrical failures or malfunctions accounted for the highest share of civilian deaths (18%) and direct property damage (20%). Nearly two of five fires (39%) involving electrical failure or malfunction occurred in the cold weather months from November through February. Arcing was the heat source in approximately three of five home fires involving an electrical failure or malfunction.

Electrical distribution and lighting equipment was the third leading form of equipment involved in fires in U.S. homes in 2012-2016, accounting for 10% of fires (behind cooking equipment and heating equipment). Non-confined home fires involving electrical distribution and lighting equipment most often originated in a bedroom (17% of total), attic or ceiling (12%), or a wall assembly or concealed space (9%). Approximately one-quarter (24%) of these fires occurred between midnight and 8 a.m., but these fires accounted for 60% of deaths.ā€

Home Exclusions

If you have wildlife in your home, you might want to consider hiring a company for a home exclusion. The reason you should hire someone instead of doing it yourself is because of the fact that if you do it yourself, there is a good change you will do it wrong, and you will never get rid of the rats, squirrels, or other animals in your home or attic. You want to make sure this gets done the right way, the first time around because if you have wildlife in your walls and attic, they can cause massive amounts of damage to your house, including your piping and electrical wiring. This would not be good, especially if you were trying to fix the issues on your own. A lot of pest control companies offer a yearly warranty that you can purchase and add on to your package so that if anything happens in the future, not only will the company come back out and exclude your home again, but they will also repair any home damages for free (well, itā€™s included in what you pay for the yearly renewal warranty).
