My Gyro Burger with Greek Fries is a wonderful Mediterranean treat. The burger patty is made very similar to an authentic gyro meat. Tzatziki sauce in this recipe is perfect for those with lactose issues; it’s not yogurt but instead it’s Hellmann’s mayonnaise! I added a Greek relish to this burger and why not add some Greek fries.

And don’t you dare call these French fries because these are Greek fries. The difference is in the soaking, oil, and cooking process. To make Greek fries you must peel your potatoes and then place them whole in cold water for a hour. The next different step is the choice of oil. For these you want extra virgin olive oil. You cook the Greek fries in skillet with just enough oil to cover the potatoes.

Gyro Burger with Greek Fries Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 6 ounces feta cheese
  • 16 small pita breads
    Burger Portion
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground lamb (you can use beef)
  • 3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • ½ medium onion, chopped
  • ½ tablespoons basil
  • 1 ½ tablespoon oregano
    Tzatziki Sauce
  • 1 heaping cup, Hellmann’s olive oil mayonnaise
  • 1 seedless cucumber, peeled and finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ a lemon, juiced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
    Relish
  • 1 package grape tomatoes, quartered
  • 1 seedless cucumber, strips peeled and diced
  • 1/3 cup red onion, sliced thinly then chopped
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
    Greek Fries
  • 4 potatoes, peeled
  • 1 inch Extra Virgin Olive Oil in a skillet, for frying
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Directions:

  1. In a bowl mix together the ingredients for the burger.
  1. Place small amounts of the meat mixture into a food processor with the mixing blade. Mix until its all combined. Shape into 8 patties and place in fridge.
Left is after food processor and right is before
  1. Place peeled whole potatoes in a bowl on cold water for 1 hour.
  2. Place the finely diced Tzatziki sauce cucumber in a strainer, sprinkle with salt and let sit at least 15 minutes. Squeeze cucumber dry in a cheese cloth or tea towel.
  1. In a small mixing bowl combine the cucumber, mayonnaise, salt, olive oil, lemon juice, and dill. Place in the fridge.
  2. In a medium bowl mix all the relish ingredients together. Set aside.
  1. Heat a skillet on medium high heat. Cook each burger patty for 8 minutes on each side.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet on medium high heat. Slice potatoes into large fries. Dry fries completely before frying in small batches. Fry until they begin to turn golden. Reduce heat to low-medium and cook until dark golden. Remove, drain, and sprinkle with salt (garnish with thyme leaves if desired)
  1. TO assemble burger. Start with a pita, smear one side with about a tablespoon of the Tzatziki sauce. Next add some of the relish and a patty. Top the first patty with feta cheese and another patty. Smear another pita with Tzatziki sauce. Serve with the Greek fries and enjoy!
