Old Fashioned Tuna Casserole Recipe:

My Old Fashioned Tuna Casserole Recipe was created from my childhood memories. I grew up eating lots of tuna casserole, mom worked nights and dad didn’t know how to cook much back then. The childhood version I ate was from a box and had a big glove on the package. Can you guess what brand it was?

Once I moved out on my own I made a quick an easy version from a cheap pack of ramen noodles. It was back in my broke young adult days. That one is really yummy and maybe I will share it one day.

We don’t eat this tuna casserole very often. Actually in 17 years of marriage I have only made it about 5 times. I rarely use anything from a can except tomatoes but once in a while this is really tasty. I hope you enjoy my Old Fashioned Tuna Noodle Casserole.

Old Fashioned Tuna Noodle Casserole Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 12 ounces egg noodles cooked to directions
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 16 ounces Shredded cheddar, reserve 1/2 c for topping
  • 2 cans ( 5 ounces each) tuna, drained
  • 15 ounces frozen peas
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In your cast iron skillet (or a large skillet) add butter on medium heat. Once butter melts, add in the flour and stir for about 1 minute.
  2. Stir in milk. Continue stirring until the milk is warmed up (do not let it boil) Stir in cheese. Reduce heat and stir often until the cheese is melted and combined. Add in the peas.
  3. Gently stir in the tuna and noodles. You don’t want the tuna to disappear into the sauce.
  4. If your using an oven safe skillet you can sprinkle the top with the remaining cheese and the bread crumbs. Otherwise transfer to a casserole dish and top the same. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the top is golden. Serve and Enjoy!
